Auto Print Technology
Greener office printing
When deciding to make your printing greener, you need to look at your use of paper, ink and electricity.
If you can reduce any of these, not only can you help the environment, you will also be able to cut your printing costs as well.
- Use recycled paper. Check with your supplier that it has a post-consumer content of 50% or more.
I ream of paper uses 6% of a tree (I wonder who researches these figures? How big is the tree?). You can calculate the
impact of your paper use at this website:
www.environmentaldefense.org/papercalculator
Recycled paper is marginally more expensive, but is just as good as standard copy paper these days. Recycle your waste paper.
- Duplex print documents and copies to save on the amount of paper you use.
- Establish a code of practice to reduce printing:
- Use the print preview button to check document layout
- Check that you don't print blank pages
- Reduce the use of separation sheets where possible
- Send an email rather than a letter
- If you want to print from a web page, cut and paste the text into a Word document. You then get just what you want.
- Don't print unnecessary images from a web page
- Save toner by using the toner-saver setting on your printer for all copies and internal documents. Don't forget to recycle
your used toner cartridges.
- Use the power-save setting on your printer.
- Switch your printer off overnight if you aren't using it.
- The greenest print job is the one you don't commit to paper.
